Otago Balance Program
Dr. Katie Wadland, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist is an Otago Balance Program trained clinician and uses this program frequently to help reduce risk of falls for her community-dwelling elders. The Otago exercise program is a comprehensive evidence-based fall prevention program with four different levels of balance, strength and flexibility exercises designed to match a patient’s current abilities and enable progression as they get stronger and as their balance improves.
Per the UNC School of Medicine Center for Aging and Health, this program has been shown to reduce fall risk in participants by 35-40%. “Recent research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention shows statistically significant improvement in clinical scores after as little as 8 weeks. The Otago Exercise Program is being promoted by the Centers for Disease Control, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Project and the Administration for Community Living in 16 states.”
