We are thrilled to announce we will be offering 6 weeks of Healthy Aging Educational Workshops, followed by a 6 week Strong and STEADI Balance and Fitness class in the Spring of 2022 with the Jenks Center in Winchester, Massachusetts.

All workshops to be held at the Jenks Center, 109 Skillings Rd, Winchester, MA 01890. Preregistration is required.

The Magic Pill: How to use exercise and physical activity to age better and live longer by Dr. Katie Wadland, Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, PT, DPT

This week you will learn how regular physical activity can reduce your chance of all-cause mortality by 33% and can significantly reduce your risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer, yet only 23% of American adults perform enough regular exercise to be considered 'Active.' This presentation will give you the tools to go from Inactive to ACTIVE. During this talk, we review the many benefits of regular physical activity, the CDC recommendations for physical activity and address the fears and concerns that frequently prevent people from exercising regularly. You will leave with the information you need to get ACTIVE, safely and effectively, at any age.

Strong Bones: Osteoporosis Prevention and Management by Dr. Katie Wadland, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist

This week you will learn how 1 in 3 women will experience an Osteoporotic Fracture in their lifetime and fractures like these are associated with decline in function, and unfortunately, early death. However, about half of these fractures can be prevented with appropriate treatment, which includes weight bearing exercise and strength training. This talk gives listeners a primer on Osteoporosis prevention and management and provides a groundwork to use movement as medicine to slow bone loss and prevent fractures for anyone at risk for this disease.

Dementia 101: The Basics and Dementia Friends Workshop by Dr. Katie Wadland, Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, PT, DPT

This week you will learn how Both Dr. Katie Wadland, PT, DPT and Dr. Tami DeAngelis are trained Dementia Friends Champions and are able offer Dementia Friend training through Dementia Friends Massachusetts. To become a Dementia Friend, you participate in a one-hour Dementia Friends Information Session. You will learn five key messages about dementia, and a bit about what it’s like to live with dementia. As a Dementia Friend, you turn your new understanding of dementia into a practical action that can help someone with dementia living in your community. Your action can be as big or small as you choose - because every action counts!

We will cover topics including nutrition, exercise and activity, prevention of falls, health literacy, mental health, and how to access community resources. Listeners will leave with a better understanding of how to better manage your chronic medical conditions, prevent and manage age-related decline, and access the help you need to help you age-in-place safely at home.

Staying STEADI as You Age: Balance Basics, Fall Prevention and the CDC STEADI Protocol +Fall Screening Event. by Dr. Tami DeAngelis, PT, DPT and Dr. Samantha Indigaro, PT, DPT

Decreased physical activity is associated with increased anxiety and depression and is linked to almost all of the diseases associated with aging. This week you will learn that 1 in 4 Older Adults fall each year and 1 in 5 of these falls cause serious injury or death. Once you’ve experienced a fall, the chances of experiencing another increases significantly. Using the CDC STEADI Initiative (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries) as a framework, this talk will help you identify areas in your life that may place you at increased fall risk, and give you actionable steps to follow to decrease your risk of falls and falls-related injuries
