Driving Assessments
Healthy Aging Physical Therapy offers Clinical Driving Assessments:
Determining whether you or someone you care about is still safe to be behind the wheel can be an emotional and oftentimes stressful situation to navigate. At Healthy Aging PT, we offer a comprehensive and objective assessment to help older adults and their loved ones in this difficult decision. Our evaluations are conducted by an Occupational Therapist with advanced education and years of experience in the field of older adult driving safety.
The comprehensive driving evaluation consists of two parts. First, an Occupational Therapist will come to your home to assess the physical, cognitive (attention, memory, problem-solving), and visual skills needed to drive. You do not need to study for any of these tests. If you are able to demonstrate sufficient skills during part one of the evaluation, you will then be referred for an on-road assessment which will take place at a later date. If you are unable to demonstrate sufficient skills, we will provide education and assistance in accessing alternative transportation options local to you. In some cases, rehabilitation to improve skills related to driving may be appropriate.
Should your occupational therapist feel you are safe to move on to the On-Road portion of the assessment, you will then be scheduled to meet with an instructor from Middlesex Driving Academy. This will be scheduled at a later date and will take approximately 1 Hour. Your occupational therapist will then speak with you again to review those results and her final recommendations.
Clinical driving assessments are currently not covered by insurance in the state of Massachusetts. The cost of part one of the clinical evaluation is $350 and can be expected to take 2-2.5 hours to complete, which includes an explanation of the results as well as next steps. The on-road portion will be an additional $150-$200, depending on location. While driving assessments are not covered by insurance, we encourage you to check with both your medical and automobile insurance for the possibility of reimbursement for these services.
